#30DayMappingChallenge Day 4: Hexagons

Day… 4? … of the #30dayMappingChallenge. Today’s theme was Hexagons.

Given that it is Black Friday here in the U.S., I thought it might be interesting to try and display retail sales data. Initially, I wanted to try to get retail sales data at a fairly granular level, but I couldn’t find any non-proprietary data sources that were a) recent and b) more granular than the metro level.

So… I went with a different view, looking at commercial building impervious surface data from the City of Charlotte. They use it for stormwater bill assessments, but I’m using it as a rough proxy for building square footage. Not where I had initially intended on taking this, but it does the job for now. Now time for another Thanksgiving Gobbler Sandwich!

#30DayMappingChallenge Day 3: Polygons

Happy Thanksgiving! Did you know that domestic turkey production is a $5B+ industry? For today’s map, I’ve used USDA data to identify the biggest turkey producing state in the country. I went somewhat off-script from the theme by adding in a dot-density layer behind the chloropleth layer to give some additional visual context to the data.

#30DayMappingChallenge Day 2: Lines

Day 2 is in the books. For today, I changed the base map a little from yesterdays exercise to de-emphasize the base street network, and then overlaid NCDOT traffic volume data. I had made a few attempts at using the QGIS layer rendering options to add a bit more visual interest with a subtle glow, but found it washed out the data.

#30DayMappingChallenge: Day 1: Points

Well, Day 1 of the #30DayMappingChallenge is in the books; I could easily sit and tweak this for another hour, but we’ll just call this a work in progress and stick a pin in it.

#30DayMapChallenge – 2021

“I wisely started with a map.”

J.R.R. Tolkien

So, I noticed a hashtag on Linked In, #30daymapchallenge , which (not surprisingly) is a month-long exercise in mapmaking, with each day having a different theme or focus.

With a little research, I came across the challenge’s GitHub page and decided I’d see how far I can make it through this challenge. Unfortunately, I am about 23 days late to the party, so I have a bit of catching up to do here. Additionally, I don’t see myself being able to pull off 30 maps in 30 days, but I’m going to try to knock out as many as possible – we shall see…

A blog was born…

Today’s terrible advice: Just remember, you’re never lost; you’re just exploring someplace new.

I wish I had something profound to say but, alas, not so much… My goal for this site is to serve as a scratchpad for various topics related to geography, cartography, GIS, urban planning, and even Yi Fu Tuan inspired rants regarding sense of place and space.
